On The Way – Carol Smallwood

from town today there was a square large field, all white
dazzling under a late summer sky with Queen Anne’s Lace:
near Gary’s Funeral Home, lace flooded the field with light—
the celebration of such delicate abandon seemed out of place.

Dazzling under a late summer sky with Queen Anne’s Lace
after the new addition to the County Commission on Aging
the celebration of such delicate abandon seemed out of place:
under lofty rolling cumulus August clouds a brash staging.

After the new addition to the County Commission on Aging
edged by a rim, a gray cemetery of felled trees by the woods,
under lofty rolling cumulus August clouds a brash staging:
an unexpected stranger on the outskirts of the neighborhood.

Edged by a rim, a gray cemetery of felled trees by the woods
near Gary’s Funeral Home lace flooded the field with light—
an unexpected stranger on the outskirts of the neighborhood:
from town today there was a square large field, all white.
