Rise – Rita Sotolongo

Lightning ignites

before sunrise.

The smell of burning coal

abuzz of phoenix feathers,

nothing to silence the screams

of blazing ballerinas.

Flight will not save her,

you say.

In bed she lies–

the light

pries open her eyes.
