except a tree – Brianne Battye

is this where stars looked bigger
from the low branch that was easy to climb?

light barely chews the edge off the sky
the driveway a path from your memory

we sit on the foundation
you recalling doors and windows

how things disappear when no one’s looking
except for a tree

field stretching out around us
a collapsed wall buried in milkweed

we sit on the foundation
and watch numberless tiny stars

Brianne Battye is the author of the chapbook wholehearted (845 Press) and contributed to the short story anthology, Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights (Tor). Brianne likes to write in a cozy corner nook. Her cat likes to look for ghosts in the walls.
